At last! In the design world, there are signs that antiques are becoming “on-trend” again.
That means more and more people are enhancing room décor with heirlooms such as four-poster beds, hand-stitched patchwork quilts, ornately framed historic art, majestic, dark-wood armoires or a variety of Victorian furnishings. Hearing that antiques are making a comeback is a relief to many parents over the age of 50. Increasingly, they have been chagrined that their adult children have thumbed their noses at beloved family antiques that had been passed down from generation to generation.
Reasons for Renewed Interest in Antiques
There are a variety of explanations for the renewed interest in antiques. One reason is the perception mid-century modern has over-saturated the market. In the minds of many, the sleek, unadorned mid-century style has simply become overdone. For many millennials and other younger purchasers of furniture and accessories, mid-century is too simplistic and pristine: They want to infuse their own personality into their décor by choosing items that have a history and appeal to their individuality and eclectic tastes. Driving markets now more than ever before, younger buyers like the idea of antiques because of their sustainability and affordability. In addition, choosing from a myriad of antiques allows individuals to imprint their own inimitable style on their surroundings. Also, trends are cyclical so “it’s time” for antiques to catch more attention among “cyclemillenials.”
In the design world, antiques are considered to be at least 100 years old. They include objects that have been around for a while and have survived into the present. In contrast, vintage references pertain to items that have been acquired during a lifetime and are at least 20 years old.
Incorporating antiques into the modern design can be appealing so long as the size of the antique furnishings complements other items in the room. For instance, a small armoire in a lighter color may be more suitable than a massive dark walnut armoire that is overpowering. A smaller antique chair can blend very well into decor with more modern pieces.
Finding the right antique is truly a treasure hunt. It can be a fun activity for couples and friends who make regular excursions to garage sales and flea markets or browse through secondhand stores for items that catch their attention. Nowadays, a plethora of antiques are showcased online on sites such as eBay, Etsy, 1st Dibs, Cherish, and EBTH (Everything But The House).
To jump on the bandwagon for the antique trend, first head for the attic and see if some of those family heirlooms can be refurbished or renewed in some way. No doubt, they have “a story to tell” about your family history that could add an aura of beauty and meaning to your home.
