The kitchen is the heart of the home. So much life happens there. Whether you like to cook or don’t it is probably the most used room in your home. What we can all agree upon is that we would rather not spend more time in the kitchen getting it or keeping it clean. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, think about these design tips to help make the kitchen easier to clean so you can spend more time enjoying your kitchen instead of cleaning it.

6 Design Tips for an Easy to Clean Kitchen

Counters6 Design Tips for an Easy to Clean Kitchen

The last thing you want to do when designing an easy-clean kitchen is to pick out tile and grout for your counters. A tile countertop is going to require a lot of cleaning and attention. Grout will require sealing and continuous scrubbing to ensure it is germ-free.

Granite is a popular countertop choice for its beauty and durability, but it will also need a yearly sealing which is not a huge deal, but if you have children it may be something to reconsider as certain items left or spilled on granite can be a problem with etching or needing to refinish the counters.

Some low-maintenance but stylish countertop choices include quartz, stainless steel, Corian, or even laminate. Laminate tops are not a trendy favorite, but companies that make these materials have begun to come out with more stylish options to stay in business so it is worth giving a second glance now.

Backsplash

Other little design tips is with the backsplash. It may not seem like the backsplash would be a big deal when it comes to cleaning, but it can be, especially the areas behind the sink and the cooktop. Solid-surface material is going to be easier to clean than mosaic tile. Stone slabs make a pretty and easily wipeable backsplash.

Floors

The floors you choose should be conducive to the lifestyle of the people in your home. For example, hardwood floors are beautiful and durable, but if water or liquid is spilled it needs to be wiped up right away. So they are not the best floors to have in super busy kitchens or those with kids where spills will happen and most likely not get immediate attention.

Large-format tiles are a great option for busy kitchens with lots of family members. Glazed tiles are best for floors with lots of liquid spills. If you really like the look of hardwood, but want an easy-to-maintain floor consider wood look tiles.

Cabinets

The easiest to clean cabinets are those with a slab or shaker-style doors. These have little to no nooks and crannies to dig into and get clean. They are also both very trendy and popular right now.

You also want to make sure you think about the interior design of your cabinets and that they allow for organized and neat storage of your items. Consider a spice cabinet and pot racks to keep things nicely tucked away.

Cooktop

Although gas is a nice feature in a cooktop, a gas stove is going to take much more effort to keep clean. The easiest cooktop to keep clean is a glass cooktop, it does require a special cleaner to avoid scratching, but it takes much less time and the sleek flat surface gives the eye a much simpler and cleaner view.

Trash and Recycling

Having an organized system for waste bins is very helpful in keeping the kitchen tidy. Consider a cabinet with designated bins tucked inside to help you keep things organized and easily ready to take to larger outside bins.
