Backyard sheds are being used for so much more than just storage now. They also increase the value of a home and with so many of us working from home, more space to spread out is always attractive. Larger sheds are a great way to create extra space on your property that can’t be found inside your home, without the giant expense of a remodel.

A backyard shed makes a great space for a home gym, and right now a home gym is very desirable to keep in shape while the big gyms are closed. It is also a great way to jump on those New Year’s Resolution health and fitness goals. How to Convert a Shed into a Gym

Here are Four Tips for Converting a Backyard Shed into a Home Gym

Insulate: It is important to insulate the walls of your shed to create a comfortable place to work out. Especially in places where the weather is unpredictable like here in the Pacific Northwest. Good quality insulation with a high R-value will keep the temperature manageable in both hot and cold weather. Adding drywall will allow you to style the inside as well.

Electricity: If you plan to use equipment like a treadmill or a tv for instructional videos, you will need to have electricity in your space. The best way to accomplish this is with the help of a professional electrician. Make sure you put in plenty of outlets on every wall.

Design/Decorating: Once you have all of the behind the scenes essentials installed, you can do the fun work of designing the space to your style tastes and preferences. Paint the walls, put up inspirational sayings with wall decals, install a mirror to better observe your form, choose calming colors for yoga or bright ones to help energize you, Post pictures of people with body types you hope to look similar to someday or of people with characteristics that inspire you to keep going.

Equipment: Find some activities that you love doing or want to try out and fill the room with equipment to make it happen. If you want a yoga space grab plenty of mats, keep open floor space, buy one of those big balls, etc. If you are looking to get toned up and defined look into some weight equipment. Maybe you prefer sports and workouts that don’t feel like work, a bike, some balls, a balance board, or interactive electronic equipment would be great ideas to fill the space for active play.
